Hair Sprays
- One may not use hair sprays on Shabbos to stiffen the hair in order to preserve a hairstyle or cause the hair to stand; this is a Rabbinic decree due to similarities with the melacha of ‘Boneh’, constructing.
- The same applies to a sheitel (BH”L 303:27 D”H Lachof, SSK 14:56).
Braiding Hair
- It is forbidden on a Rabbinic level to braid hair on Shabbos; this is again due to similarities with the melacha of Boneh (constructing). It is likewise forbidden to undo braids, due to similarities with the melacha of Soser (destroying).
- Sheitels and dolls: It is also forbidden to braid or undo braided hair on sheitels, dolls etc, due to the melacha of ‘oreig’, weaving (SA 303:26, MB 82, SSK 14:58, fn150).
Curling Hair
- For the same reason as braiding, one may not curl hair (including peios) on Shabbos (SSK 14:58).
Hair Partings
- It is perfectly acceptable to part one’s hair with one’s fingers on Shabbos, though one may not do so with a comb or brush, as discussed here (SSK 14:55).
Hairpins
- It is permissible to place clips, hairpins or decorative combs into the hair on Shabbos, whether for decorative purposes or to hold the hair in place (SSK 14:53).
Hairbands and Bobbles
- There is, o problem with gathering the hair together and making it orderly with the use of a hairband or hair bobble (known also as a ‘hair tie’ or ‘hair elastic’) (SSK 14:58).
