Erev Tisha B’Av

Halachos are based on the rulings of Mishna Berura (MB), reflecting Ashkenazi practice.

For the halachos of Erev Tisha B’Av which falls on Shabbos, see here.

Tachanun, Tzidkascha

  • Tachanun is not said at Mincha on Erev Tisha B’av, nor is Tzidkascha said if it is Shabbos, as Tisha B’av is called a ‘moed’ (SA 552:12).

Torah Learning on Erev Tisha B’Av

  • The Rema brings the practice that from midday on Erev Tisha B’av, one should only learn the areas of Torah that one may learn on Tisha B’av (which we will iyH outline in the coming days), so that when Tisha B’av commences one does not have other areas of Torah on one’s mind which may bring one joy.
  • However, this practice is only a stringency and several poskim state that one may learn what one wishes, in particular if following this stringency will lead to one not learning, or learning less than one would do normally. Mishna Berura also rules that if Erev Tisha B’Av falls on Shabbos, one may follow the lenient opinions to learn whatever one wishes after Chatzos (SA 553:2, MB8, 10, Dirshu 11, 12).

Pleasure Trips

  • One should not go on pleasure trips on Erev Tisha B’av (R 553:2)

Seudah Hamafsekes

  • There are specific halachos that relate to how and what one may eat at the seudah hamafsekes on erev Tisha b’av. The Seudah hamafsekes is the final meal that one eats in the afternoon, before the start of the fast. See our page on this topic here.
