Halachos of Motzei Tisha B’Av

These halachos are based on the rulings of Mishna Berura (MB), reflecting Ashkenazi practice.

  • As the Beis Hamikdash burnt until the end of the 10th of Av, we continue to practice some of the restrictions of the Nine Days on this day, but only until Chatzos, halachic midday. Even then, there are some areas where we are even more lenient than in the Nine Days, now that we are past the primary part of the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash (SA 558:1, MB1-2).

Meat and Wine

  • One should not consume meat or wine before Chatzos on the 10th Av, unless at a seudas mitzvah (where all invitees may eat – it is not restricted to ten guests like it is in the week of Tisha B’av) or wine at havdala.
  • However, unlike during the Nine Days one may eat food that was merely cooked with meat and one who always says Birkas Hamazon over wine may do so and drink the wine (SA 558:1, MB2, BHL D”H Shelo Le’echol, MB 556:3).

Music

  • The restriction on listening to music also applies until Chatzos on the 10th of Av (MB 558:2).

Bathing, Haircuts, Washing Clothes

  • One should similarly not bathe, take a haircut or wash clothes until Chatzos on the 10th of Av. However, when Tisha B’av is on Thursday, these activities are permitted even before Chatzos when being done out of respect for Shabbos.
  • The poskim debate whether these activities are then permitted even on Thursday night or only Friday morning and whether they are only permitted if done specifically for the purpose of Shabbos – one should consult with one’s Rav for practical guidance (MB 551:37, 558:3, Dirshu 7, PT4).

Intimacy

  • Some say it is praiseworthy to refrain from intimacy on the night of the 10th of Av, unless the woman is going to mikva that night, or the husband is going away the next day, or has just returned from travelling (MB 558:2).

Other Restrictions

  • There is also debate in the poskim about whether one may wash one’s whole body in cool water, wear freshly laundered clothes, buy and fix clothes or say Shehecheyanu before Chatzos on the 10th of Av (some say on shouldn’t say Shehecheyanu the entire day); consult with a Rav for practical guidance. (Dirshu 558:5-6)

Restrictions on Motzei Tisha B’Av Nidche

  • When Tisha B’av falls on Shabbos, so the fast is postponed until Sunday, there are no restrictions that carry over from the Nine Days to the Monday morning.
  • Meat and wine should not be consumed on Sunday night (except the Havdala wine), but the other restrictions of the Nine Days do not apply, so one may shave etc (SA 558:1, MB 4, MB 556:3).
