We will now bez”h start outlining the halachos of cooking as the food is moved from the Kli Rishon into other containers. As will we iyH outline going forward, this only applies to liquid dishes poured out from a Kli Rishon. Solid foods (eg a piece of meat) retain the stringencies of a Kli Rishon even if they have been transferred to another container (SSK 1:64)
Overview
- When pouring from a hot Kli Rishon (known as ‘iruy kli rishon’, whether the Kli Rishon is on or off the fire) directly on top of another food or liquid, whilst it is still connected to the Kli Rishon, the stream which is being poured has the ability to cook the outer layer of the food or liquid it is being poured onto. Therefore, one may not pour directly from a Kli Rishon onto anything which may not be placed into a Kli Rishon (but one may pour onto anything which can be, as outlined above) (SA 318:10, MB 74, SSK 1:52)
- Examples: For example, one may not pour hot water from on urn into a cup which contains raw tea leaves or uncooked food remnants. One should also avoid pouring onto liquids which had been fully cooked but entirely cooled down such as tea essence.
Pouring Into a Wet Cup
- One should ensure that there is no liquid in a cup one is pouring into from an urn, unless the liquid had previously been cooked and hadn’t entirely cooked down. If the liquid had initially itself been hot but has fully cooled down, it suffices to shake the drops out of the cup out to this end, whereas if the liquid in the cup hadn’t previously been cooked, one should properly dry the cup. This is very relevant when preparing hot drinks etc (BH”L 318:12 D”H Vehu Shelo, SSK 1:52, fn 246).
Pouring onto Coffee, Cocoa Powder etc
- As mentioned above powders and granules which dissolve in water should ideally be treated as liquids and one should avoid using them in situations where bishul could apply. Therefore, one should avoid pouring from an urn directly onto coffee granules, cocoa powder etc even if they were previously cooked when they were produced (MB 318:71, SSK 1:55)
Pouring into a Cup With Significant Cold Liquid
- If the cup one is pouring into from the urn has a significant quantity of cold liquid in it, such that the amount one pours in from the urn will not raise the overall temperature of the liquid to above YSB (Yad Soledes Bo), this is permissible (SA 318:12, MB 83, SSK 1:57).
